OVERVIEW:

The primary purpose of tie rod ends is to apply pressure to the tires and affect the stability, security, and longevity of the tires. On rough roads, the tires can be subject to bumps and jostles, yet the rod end remains fixed to the vehicle chassis while the tie rod end performs both the vertical and horizontal steering functions.

USES:

Tie rods and tie rod end ball joints are what connect the steering rack gearbox to the steering knuckles so the turning input from the driver makes its way to the wheels. Tie rods thread onto the steering rack to also allow for steering alignment adjustments to be made.
