OVERVIEW:

The primary use of a tie rod end is to transfer movement to the tires in order to affect the control, safety and longevity of the tire. While driving, the tires encounter bumpy terrain, but the rack end remains still while the tie rod end actively performs its vertical and horizontal steering role.

USES:

Tie rods and tie rod end ball joints are what connect the steering rack gearbox to the steering knuckles so the turning input from the driver makes its way to the wheels. Tie rods thread onto the steering rack to also allow for steering alignment adjustments to be made.
