OVERVIEW:

The primary purpose of a tie rod end is to transfer forces from the steering linkage to the steering knuckle, thus influencing the vehicle's control, safety, and tire life. When driving, road imperfections may cause the tires to deflect, but the rack and pinion is fastened to the frame while the tie rod end performs its horizontal and vertical motions to steer.

USES:

Tie rods and tie rod end ball joints are what connect the steering rack gearbox to the steering knuckles so the turning input from the driver makes its way to the wheels. Tie rods thread onto the steering rack to also allow for steering alignment adjustments to be made.
